Timelines

This interactive timeline is a visualization of when Howard Carter wrote about excavating King Tutankhamun's tomb and the publication of the discovery by The Times of London. Each timeline entry appears as a text box with a black background and includes an image of the letter or article, as well as the headline, date, a short summary, the source of the material, and a media caption. Both the headline and the media caption are hyperlinked to the item's entry in the database, which includes images of the text and transcriptions (for the Carter letters) and simple text OCR (for The Times of London articles), along with metadata.

To scroll through the entries in chronological order, select the arrow on the right side of the text box. To scroll back in time, select the arrow on the left side of the text box. Since The Times of London articles were published later than the discovery itself, chronologically, the Howard Carter letters appear significantly before the selections from The Times of London.

Below the text box is a visualization of the timeline. In light grey, the Howard Carter selections are displayed. Below, in darker grey, The Times of London selections are displayed. It is possible to select an entry from this timeline to see it appear with more information as a text box. Each entry on the timeline has a thumbnail of the letter or article and the headline. Entries are plotted according to the date they were published.

This timeline was created using Knight Lab's Timeline JS tool.

Exhibits

Navigating the Howard Carter Letters and Documents Exhibit

This exhibit contains a rare collection of over 70 personal letters and documents from Howard Carter’s career in Egypt dating from 1899-1935. The exhibit consists of three collections which are accessible via the menu on the right side of the page: Letters Home, Personnel Files, and Memoir and Writings. Each collection contains its own gallery organized by date in ascending order.

We have also curated a selection of highlights for each collection that can serve as an introduction to its contents including important dates, life events, and other captivating narratives. Additional information about these collections can be found on each exhibit page.

Users may browse gallery items by clicking the image thumbnails, or the collection highlights links, which will bring you to an item’s page. Each item page displays the image(s) of the selected document, the transcribed text, item metadata, as well as a shadowbox viewer. Clicking next item or previous item at the bottom of the page will move you through the gallery.

This exhibit contains two narrative collections of specific articles from the total 140 available on the site.

The Times Exclusive Agreement contains twenty-six articles resulting explicitly from the Times' agreement with Lord Carnarvon that gave the newspaper exclusive rights to publish the story and images of the discovery of Tutankhamun tomb.

Carter's Dispute with the Egyptian Government collects fifteen articles and four letters concerning the legal dispute the excavation team got into with the Egyptian Government in 1924.

Browsing Items

The Times of London archive and the Howard Carter Letters and Documents can also be browsed simultaneously by clicking the Browse Items tab in the left menu. The items can be ordered by Title, Creator, or Date Added to the site. Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to sort by the item's own date of creation/publication. You can search all items for keywords or dates by using the search box, found on the left of each page below the site menu.

Hovering over the Browse Items tab will open two more sub-headings. Clicking Advanced Search opens up a more complex search function where the items can be searched via multiple parameters.

Clicking Browse by Tag will enable you to browse the archive by keyword. Keywords were chosen by the creators of the site based on the content of each item. The Keywords appear larger on the screen when there are more items with that tag.

Clicking the item title or image thumbnail will take you to that item’s page. Each item page displays the image(s) of the selected document, the transcribed text, the  item’s metadata, as well as a shadowbox viewer. Click next item or previous item at the bottom of the page to navigate between items.

At the bottom of every item page, the original files are available for zooming, download, and more detailed viewing, including in Full Screen. This element is immediately accessible upon opening an item by hitting the [Command]+[Down Arrow] on Mac or [Home]+[Down Arrow] on PC.
